Corky Dawson Football Scholarship
Established to honor Jimmy W. "Corky" Dawson, who quarterbacked one of the greatest football teams in the history of WT. In his third season under head coach Joe Kerbel, the team compiled a 9-2 record, defeated Ohio in the 1962
Sun Bowl, and outscored all opponents by a total of 312 to 115. Corky was active in the ROTC program at WT, going on to serve in the army during the Vietnam War as an Army Aviator, where he received two Bronze Stars and an Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters. After service, Corky became a football coach and then had a successful career as a State Farm agent. This scholarship will go to a member of the WTAMU football team who meets NCAA eligibility standards. The scholarship will fund nine individual scholarship awards annually with two from the College of Business, two from the Department of Agriculture, one from the Department of Education and four University-wide. Emphasis shall be given, but not limited, to students from the Panhandle or South Plains regions of Texas. Student will be required to write a short personal biography and prepare to be personally interviewed about the information in their scholarship application. Your account will be credited toward your tuition and fees when you register for classes.
As an important note, this scholarship award is tied to your FAFSA application and follows federal and state need-based eligibility rules. Based on your FAFSA results, the scholarship award is within the domain of your need-based eligibility. Hence, the federal and state guidelines may limit the ability of this award to be combined with other scholarship awards (external or internal) and/or financial aid without being at risk of reducing financial need and lowering this or an alternative award (e.g., could lower student loan amount eligibility, although scholarship funds should be much preferred to loan allocations). Sydney loved living life to the fullest, serving God, being active, lots of Chicken Express sweet tea, and the diversity of emergency medicine and the many new challenges it brought each day. Sydney and her boyfriend were tragically taken from us on Marcy 6, 2017 due to a wildfire in the Panhandle while tending to the land and cattle that they loved. The family's wish is to help nursing students with a passion and drive similar to Sydney's achieve their goals in her memory.
